22 Mar Celestial Self Development Centre (CSDC) Spreads the Magic of Literacy
As part of its 10 year anniversary celebrations Celestial Self Development Centre is re-launching its “Raise A Reader SLU®” campaign geared at making age-appropriate books available to Preschoolers in the Central Castries and surrounding areas. Literacy is one of the most powerful indicators of a child’s future success, yet less than half of Saint Lucia’s third grade students read at grade level and one third of young children aren’t read to every day. Having direct access to books can help reverse this trend, developing confident readers prepared for success in school.
We are encouraging donations from the general public, companies, organizations and clubs. The relaunch of this campaign will began with a donation of books to preschoolers at the Heritage Early Childhood Development and Educational Center (H.E.C.D.E.C.) located at Peart’s Gap. The “Raise A Reader SLU®” campaign officially begins today Thursday 22nd March, 2018 and runs through until Thursday May 31st, 2018. May is designated as reading month in Saint Lucia.
Individuals or organizations who make donations will receive special acknowledgement of their donation on our website, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts. Just bring us your new and gently used books and drop them off at our book drive collection box as noted below. Lead by example, encourage your child to read by joining our library. We at the Celestial Self Development Centre’s Library will make a donation to the campaign on your behalf.
Books should be for infants and children ages six (6) months through to five (5) years and be in good condition, without torn pages or writing in them. Please no magazines, textbooks or coloring books.
Please send, drop off or pledge donations to:

Through our “Raise a Reader SLU®” campaign and partnerships, the books we collect will be distributed to children attending preschools in the selected areas during Reading Week 2018 as well as visits during the designated period by Celestial Self Development Centre Library Staff and other interested persons in the community to the schools to read to the students.
As part of the official launch which took place today Thursday 22nd March, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. we also had a special Story time session with the children at H.E.C.D.E.C.
Thank you for supporting this important literacy initiative!
