OCES/ECCB Legacy Programme
Governance Training for OECS Netball Associations

For a period of fifteen (15) weeks Celestial Self Development Centre facilitated Governance Training for various National Netball Associations from the Organisation Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). The sessions was conducted by Thecla Deterville and Geraldine Lendor-Gabriel.

The training was funded by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB); with the Caribbean Netball Association (CNA) providing oversight and technical backstopping; and was titled “Governance for Sporting Organisations”. The training was conducted virtually via Zoom Meeting Communications Platform.

The main objective of this training is to provide participants with the required knowledge and skills enabling them to better manage their Associations with particular emphasis on the role of good governance in the process. This initiative also served to enhance the human resource capability and capacity to drive the delivery of a high-performance netball culture and an OECS netball product that is compliant with internationally competitive netball standards.

The participating countries were the eight (8) OECS member states; Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and specially invited, Bermuda and Cayman Islands.

The session were held every Wednesday evening from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., with an average attendance of 25 persons per session. The 15 sessions covered topics such as; General Principles of Sports Governance; Creating a Strategic Plan; Strategic Planning for Sports Organisations; Functions of the Board; Compliance; Financial Management for non-profits;  Conducting Effective Meetings,  Sources & Ideas for grant funding and the application process, Effective Leadership in Sporting Organisations and Board Assessments.

The sessions were highly interactive utilising open discussion, chat, breakout rooms, polls, and questions and answer sessions. Training Manuals were distributed for download to participants for each module. Participants were also provided with links and relevant templates for the sessions presented.

Here’s what some participants had to say about the sessions;

I learnt a lot. Even though it was geared towards sports, there were some aspect of it that I was able to apply in my work. The sessions were very good.

I honestly did not expect to cover all the topics which were delivered. It was an excellent session and topics that would benefit all organisations. Other than being able to assist the Netball Association in my country, I am better prepared to take my netball club forward. Thanks for the preparation and a great learning experience with Celestial.

Celestial Self Development Centre has continued to offer to meet with associations to follow through on their constitutions, strategic plans and funding proposals.
